Cihad Caner
Demonst(e)rating the Untamable Monster
M1 VideoSpace
Cihad Caner (* 1990 in Istanbul, lives in Rotterdam) questions social mechanisms of representation and power in his artistic practice. His video work focuses on the figure of the monstrous and its layered meanings. Caner’s animated monsters sing, hum, and speak of exclusion, self-assertion, and hospitality.

It is a stunning and deeply moving work that makes us remember the importance of inclusion, understanding and resistance, in order to shape a really strong society.

Who is ‘made’ into a monster is always a question of power relations. In order to answer this question, Caner draws inspiration from several centuries.
[Wer zum Monster „gemacht“ wird, ist auch immer eine Frage der Macht-Verhältnisse. Caner zieht dafür Inspiration aus mehreren Jahrhunderten.]
