Aslan Goisum

Suspect

Maschinenhaus M1 / M1 VideoSpace

Aslan Goisum (* 1991 in Grozny, lives in Berlin) works with found or recreated objects, video, works on paper, sculpture and language, achieving a progression of forms that are at the same time abstract and concrete, composed and open-ended. He creates pictorial and architectural spaces that undermine access to understanding. Suspect is Goisum’s first institutional solo project in Germany, presenting a new body of work that continues his observation of our attempts at pinning down meaning.

Under the title ‘Suspect’, Goisum has furnished one floor of the Kindl Centre so oppressively sparingly that it quickly becomes clear: Here, someone is contradicting authoritarianism by using the opposite visual language. Goisum does not try to overwhelm. Nevertheless, his works bear witness to violence.

The artist Aslan Goisum has created a powerful space that forces silence and creates uncertainty. The topic is repression. (...) Goisum's photos show no explosion, no outburst, no laughter, no blood. They remain calm in absolute silence. It is suffocating.
(...) Die Fotos von Goisumzeigen keine Explosion, keinen Ausfall, kein Lachen, kein Blut. Sie verharren ruhig in absoluter Stille. Es ist zum Ersticken.]
